Catch a Critter!
(4-Adult) Grab a net and join us for a special day with a park scientist to see, touch, and study wetland creatures up close and personal. Use magnifying lenses to study their unique characteristics. What critters live in the wetland? What can these little animals tell us about their home? This rare opportunity to dip-net in the wetland is possible through the guidance of our park naturalists.
Celebrate National Salamander Day
(5-Adult) Virginia is a worldwide destination for salamander fans. Celebrate this special day with a salamander search both on land and in the stream. Learn how salamanders compare with their amphibian cousins. Children younger than 10 years must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Copperheads and Black Racers
(8-Adult) Assist a naturalist with a reptile survey. We search for, capture, identify and release snakes. Learn habits and preferred habitats of our native snakes. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
Corn Grinding & Clay Pottery
(4-Adult) How did the Powhatan Native Americans use the plants and animals you see every day for their medicine, grocery store, clothing and fun? Immerse yourself in a way of life 400 years ago. Grind corn, make a clay pot, master corn darts and go on a guided tour to see the park from the perspective of a Viriginia Indian.
(4-Adult) Satisfy your curiosity and your sweet tooth with one howling campfire. Listen to coyote calls, take a short hike, and make s'mores as you learn about this wily canine. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
(3-Adult) Celebrate the arrival of creepy crawlies emerging for spring with a fun run around the pond and through the woods. See if you can survive the dangerous world of bugs by avoiding bug spray or spider webs! Learn about them during a critter talk and create a bug craft. Costumes encouraged!
Dairy Farming at Walney: Butter & Cheese
(4-Adult) Taste hand-churned butter and sample cheeses while learning about the dairy industry's importance at Walney. Tour the historic dairy and try your hand at milking a pretend cow. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Dinosaur Egg Hunt
(2-8 yrs.) Stomp over to Hidden Oaks Nature Center to enjoy a dinosaur-themed program and outdoor egg hunt while visiting Dinoland in Nature Playce. Make a dino craft. Canceled in case of rain.
Earth Day Celebration
(8-Adult)Join us on April 22 to celebrate the world around us! Explore the hidden gem of our stream valley and pond with a tackle-the-trash hike, critter talk, Earth Day craft and more! Help us give back to Mother Nature by appreciating and beautifying our park!
Easter Egg Hunt at Clemyjontri
(1-9 yrs) Come out for kid-friendly Easter fun including egg hunts, crafts, photo ops with the Easter Bunny and more at Clemyjontri Park. Egg hunts are split by age and run every thirty minutes. Preregistration required. Carousel rides available for $2/child. Visit with the Easter Bunny before or after your hunt. Rain date Saturday, Apr. 7 at the same times.
(8-Adult) The world around us is constantly shifting and changing shape! Explore the trails and stream valley to help restore areas that have been worn down due to erosion! Plan to get dirty!
Evening Woodcock Walk
(Adults) Take an evening stroll through the forest to one of the park's largest meadows. We'll listen for the call of the male woodcock and hopefully see his amazing courtship dance and flight. Bring a flashlight. Approximately 1.5 mile walk on uneven terrain. Canceled if rain.
Family Owl Outing
(6-Adult) Discover the secret world of owls. Learn what makes these raptors excellent night predators with a presentation followed by a trail hike to hopefully hear or spot one of Huntley's resident owls. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Father's Day Campfire
(2-Adult) Mark Father's Day weekend with a hike, campfire and s'mores. Learn about some of nature's best fathers, take a hike near a stream and eat s'mores. Moms invited too. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
(2-Adult) Join a naturalist and youth volunteers as we demonstrate how we feed our site display animals. Make a birdfeeder to take home and use. Search for worms and insects and assist in serving dinner. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
(8-Adult) When the power goes out what will you do? How will you survive? Join us and learn how to build a fire using fire starters we make ourselves! Discover the natural role fire has in an ecosystem and the many uses fire can provide!
Get Ready for Dragonfly Season!
(Adults) Dragonfly season is here! Brush up on your observational skills and learn to identify some common and rare dragonflies and damselflies that live in Huntley Meadows Park.
Get Ready for Warbler Migration!
(Adults) Learn or refresh your warbler calls and identification skills with this engaging educational session. Common warbler migrants of Huntley Meadows will be covered.
Give a Hoot Campfire! (4-Adult)
(4-Adult) Barred owls inhabit our stream valley parks. Learn to identify these owls from other native owls while taking a hike. Finish by enjoying s'mores around the campfire.
