Adopt a Woodland Wiggler-Winter
(8-12 yrs.) Naturalists train participants in proper husbandry, care and feeding of three different creatures monthly over a three month period. Each month, students receive a new animal to take home. The next month, the student returns the critter, reports on the successes and challenges, learns about a different creature and takes a new animal home. Fee covers three months of participation. An additional $20, one-time material fee is payable at the first class. Additional animals available at programs monthly. All Things Frozen Tea Party
(4-Adult) Join the naturalist as she shares stories about animals that enjoy being chilly including penguins and polar bears plus others that just figure out a way to get through the cold. Enjoy snowman crafts. Come dressed as your favorite frozen friend. Enjoy a sit down tea with china cups, treats and crafts. Contact the nature center one week prior to event with any dietary restrictions. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
Animal Feeding at the Nature Center
(3-Adult) Its dinner time at the nature center and worms and insects are on the menu. Help our naturalist care for and feed the nature center's animals.
Animal Pajama Party
(3-7yrs.) Put on your pajamas and come to the nature center to hear bedtime stories, meet animals and wish goodnight to the center's live animals. Bring your favorite stuffed animal with you. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Animal Sweethearts Dance
(3-5 yrs) It's back, the social event of Hidden Ponds winter season! There will be dancing, refreshments, crafts and live animals to entertain.
(4-8 yrs.) Play musical valentines and critter sweetheart games as you learn how animals find a mate. Meet live animals, make an animal valentine craft. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Astronomy Campfire (4-Adult)
(4-Adult) Enjoy a campfire and learn what ancient cultures saw in the stars. Make s'mores over the embers after hearing tales of the constellations. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Minimum age to attend program is 4yrs.
Astronomy for Family Fun: Moon
(6-Adult) Learn about the moon and do fun activities and crafts that help demystify the moon and bring it down to earth. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
Astronomy Night at Riverbend
(8-Adult) Meet at the Visitor Center to explore different astronomy topics then stick around for a campfire and roast marshmallows. Topics: 12/30 & 2/24 Comets and Meteors; 12/23 & 3/10 Moon Phases and Eclipses; 1/20 Tools and Tech to observe the sky; 2/10 Constellations and Star Charts.
Beatrix Potter Tea
(3-Adult) Learn about the famous author. Nibble on cupcakes and sip fruit punch or tea while enjoying stories about that precocious bunny family. Meet our own Sabrina and Blossom white tail rabbits. Learn what wild bunnies do in the winter. Make a bunny of your own to take home.
Birds Around Us
(2-Adult) Meet at Cabell's Mill. Beaks, feathers, nests and talons are examined to explore the avian world that surrounds us. Find out about bird life cycles, migration patterns and adaptations that make birds such fascinating animals. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
(12-Adult) What's new in the night sky? Join park naturalists as they take you on a tour of constellations, comets and other current events happening in the heavens above. Canceled in case of rain or other severe weather.
Campfire Fridays: Winter
(3-Adult) Come along for a night of campfire, s'mores, animals and more. Each night features a different topic and different areas of the park that we visit. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
Campfire Saturdays: Fall
(3-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire to explore the woodlands and lake front spots where wildlife hides and resides. Programs are guided by a naturalist and end with a cozy campfire. S'mores are provided.
Caribbean Reef Puppet Show
(3-y yrs.) Join an octopus, ray, shark, lobster and all their friends in this undersea adventure. After the show, play a game, sing songs of the sea and make a craft. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Chinese New Year: Year of the Dog
(4-Adult) Celebrate the Chinese New Year with traditional games and stories. Paint your Chinese zodiac animal, make a craft and participate in a Lion Dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.
Cocoa and Craft in the Park
(2-12 yrs.) Stay and play for 20 minutes or more as you sip cocoa and create up to three crafts. New craft kits each month. Children younger than 10 must be accompanied and assisted by an adult.
Corn Grinding & Clay Pottery
(4-Adult) How did the Powhatan Native Americans use the plants and animals you see every day for their medicine, grocery store, clothing and fun? Immerse yourself in a way of life 400 years ago. Grind corn, make a clay pot, master corn darts and go on a guided tour to see the park from the perspective of a Viriginia Indian.
Cross County Trail Hayride (2-Adult)
(2-Adult) Take a hayride to Accotink Creek along part of the Cross County Trail. Build a campfire and roast hotdogs and s'mores. Meet at the Lake Accotink Park trestle lot.
Dino Puppet Show & Activities
(3-7 yrs.) Dinosaurs once roamed all the Earth, places far and near. How do we know that they were here? Enjoy a puppet show along with fun fossil facts. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
