Minecraft Chess (6-12 yrs)
In this class offered by STEM exCEL, students build critical-thinking skills and self-confidence by learning the game of chess in the fun format of Minecraft. Students use both classic chess boards and an online platform in Minecraft to develop their skills in a way most comfortable for them. Students leave with improved chess skills, sportsmanship and the ability to learn from mistakes in a challenging and entertaining way.
Minecraft Modding (8-12 yrs)
In this class offered by STEM exCEL, Minecraft Modding and Java programming are tied together to allow students more customization in their mods. At the same time, this course teaches students how to solve problems in a multiplayer game while building and collaborating. Students learn to advance their programming skills writing and implementing large scale Minecraft modifications. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class.
Radio Astronomy (9-Adult)
(9-Adult) What can you hear from space? Learn about cosmic noise and what it tells us about the sun, the magnetic structure surrounding some of our planets and the strange decametric radio signals from Jupiter and its moon Io. Learn how our galaxy is mapped using the faint signals from hydrogen atoms and the behavior of molecules and the meanings behind the sounds of pulsars, strange, dense, fast-rotating stars. Come hear what our universe is saying.
Rainbows, Haloes & Glories (6-Adult)
(6-Adult) Course covers common and uncommon phenomena that can be seen in the open sky such as rainbows, haloes and glories. Sunrise and sunset phenomena like the green flash, the purple light and simple questions such as why is the sky blue and why are sunsets orange are also covered. This simple course teaches you how to better appreciate the sky both day and night.
Real, Cool Science (7-14 yrs)
(7-14 yrs) In this class, offered by Moonlit Wings Productions, step into the laboratory and join Dr. Know-It-Alls team of scientists in this play-based class. Curious kids conduct classic experiments and blend bubbly brews with hands-on tools and interactive presentations. Create invisible ink, gooey green slime and more, then explore your results creatively through crafts and skits. Supply fee of $35-45 payable at first class.
Robotics, Engineering & Coding (8-12 yrs
Using 3D building instructions and the most advanced technology, students in this Digital Kidz class work with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, the latest generation of robots. Students learn teamwork while building robots and programming them to overcome challenges. Students use sensors and a microcontroller to truly customize their creations.
Science for Homeschoolers (13-17 yrs)
(13-17 yrs.) This course involves lecture with an emphasis on hands on field work studying natural sciences. Learn about aquatic ecosystems, energy and matter in the ecosystems, how humans impact the natural world, the many different interactions of living things from microbes to large mammals. Students participate in field work related to soil studies, biodiversity studies, plant and animal studies, and wetlands studies.
Science for Homeschoolers (6-9 yrs)
(6-9 yrs.) Students explore marsh, meadow, and forest to learn about change patterns, plant characteristics, animal life needs and observation. Basic reading and writing skills required. Students must be comfortable working in a group.
