NATURE, HISTORY AND HORTICULTURE IN FAIRFAX COUNTY

 September 2012   Volume 12,  Number 6

Break Into Prison

Tour the Lorton prison grounds.

It has been 11 years since the Lorton Reformatory was closed.  The main prison complex is headed for redevelopment, and you have a chance to explore some of the site before those changes occur.  Come celebrate the site's transformation at the Great Escape Prison to Park Festival on Saturday, September 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Laurel Hill Park.  Sign up in advance for wagon ride tours of the prison grounds.  The festival includes fishing, visits with farm animals, children's games, horse rides, live music, a sack slide, food, a pond exploration, guided nature walks, disc golf and mountain biking demonstrations.  Admission is $2.  Wagon rides are $10 prepaid.  As always, there's more information on the Park Authority website.

A Memorable Day at Ox Hill

"A supremely significant site to our nation." So said one of the speakers at Ox Hill Battlefield Park during the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ox Hill.  Video.

Pride and Prejudice and Knitting

Mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by knitting a shawl like Elizabeth Bennett may have worn. Classes begin Oct. 14.

Raising Funds for Riverbend

Help the Friends of Riverbend Park raise $10,000 for the park with just a click.

Moon Over Riverbend

Moon, river and you. A campfire, some stories, and ancient lava flows. Add a scope, and you're ready. Sign up for International Observe the Moon Night at Riverbend Park on Sept. 22.

Park Bond Information

Fairfax County residents will see a general obligation bond for parks on the ballot when they go to the polls on Nov. 6. Projects the bond would fund include restoration of the miller's house at Colvin Run Mill, renovation of the tenant house at Historic Huntley and a new shelter at Hidden Pond Nature Center. Here's information about that park bond.

Vendors Sought for Community Flea Market

Make plans now to flee to a community Flea Market on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Hunter House in Nottoway Park, Vienna, Va. The Park Authority is seeking vendors for the market.  For information on reserving a spot, contact Barbara Ziman at 703-437-1794 or Barbara.Ziman@fairfaxcounty.govSpaces sold out in previous years, so early registration is a good idea.
